Japan Entry and Exit Requirements

What is required for entry?
Registration on the Visit Japan Web website
To speed up the arrival procedures in Japan, the Japanese government recommends registering in advance on the Visit Japan Web website and completing all the required information before your trip.
This service covers entry procedures related to visa registration (if applicable), immigration, and customs declaration.

Upon arrival in Japan, you will need to present your personal Visit Japan Web page displaying the QR codes for your customs declaration and arrival card.

If asked to indicate your place of stay, please enter the address of your first hotel in Japan. If we have arranged your hotel reservations, we will provide you with the correct address individually.
Purpose of visit: Tourism.
IMPORTANT!
Importing meat products in any form into Japan is strictly prohibited. Fresh or raw plant products are also not allowed.
Therefore, please leave sausages and similar products at home. Vegetables such as cucumbers or tomatoes may only be brought in preserved or canned form.
Medical Insurance
We strongly recommend purchasing travel medical insurance covering medical emergencies. This will help you avoid unnecessary stress and significant expenses in case of illness or emergency during your trip.
Please note that medical insurance is not mandatory for entry into Japan, but it is highly recommended.

Landing card
If you have completed all the required registration on Visit Japan Web https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp/en/ you may skip the information below regarding the immigration card and customs declaration.
Alternatively, both the immigration card and customs declaration can be completed on paper forms, which are usually distributed on the plane or at the airport.
During the flight you will typically be given an immigration card to complete before landing. The form should be filled out in English or Japanese.
When indicating your place of stay, please write the address of your first hotel in Japan.
Purpose of visit: Tourism.
After arrival, you will proceed to the immigration control area, where you will present:
  • your passport
  • the completed immigration card
You will also be asked to provide a photograph and fingerprints, which are standard security procedures and take less than a minute.

Customs Declaration
A customs declaration must also be completed regardless of the amount of currency, baggage, or items you carry.
It can be completed either: in the Visit Japan Web application, or on a yellow paper form distributed on the plane or available at the customs area after baggage claim.
The form should also be filled out in English or Japanese, confirming that you are not carrying any prohibited items.

Tax-free
You may also scan the information page of your passport in the Visit Japan Web system to speed up tax-free procedures in shops, so you do not need to carry your passport with you.
Please note that not all stores support this service, and in many shops you will still need to present your physical passport when purchasing tax-free items.
